Detour set up around buckling asphalt in Everson

EVERSON, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) officials issued an alert this evening, June 27th, about 8:30pm warning that a detour around buckling asphalt in Everson was being set up.

A section of Mead Avenue (SR544) near Roeder Street was found to be buckling late today, the second day of high temperatures around 100° across much of Whatcom County.

As of 8:45pm, WSP (WSP) Trooper Will Glahn said the Washington State Department of Transportation was mobilizing to set up a detour around the impacted section of road and there was no estimate for how long the road would be closed.

As of 9:45pm, Glahn said WSDOT expects the detour will remain in place into tomorrow while repairs are made to the roadway.

UPDATE 2:40pm 6/28/21 – The road has been reopened in both directions according to WSDOT.
