BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) released additional information regarding the crash that temporarily closed N State Street yesterday, Friday, May 19th.
BPD Spokesperson Lieutenant Claudia Murphy told Whatcom News via email officers responded to the 1700 block of N State Street about 1:05pm due to reports of a van versus motorcycle crash. Witnesses reported the motorcyclist had serious injuries.
Officers arrived to find Bellingham Fire Department personnel providing medical care to the seriously injured motorcyclist.
Witnesses reported that the motorcycle was seen traveling eastbound on N State Street from Ellis Street at a high rate of speed when a van exited a driveway onto N State Street and the motorcycle collided with the van.
Both the driver of the van and the motorcycle rider were transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s ED for further medical care. The van driver sustained lacerations and soft tissue damage, non-life threatening. The motorcycle rider was transported to Harborview [Medical Center in Seattle] for further care and is in critical condition. Bellingham Police Department Lieutenant Claudia Murphy
That section of N State Street was closed about 2 hours during the collision investigation and while crime scene investigaters processed the scene.
The crash investigation is ongoing.
