Details released regarding Sunday morning crash on W Axton Rd

Washington State Patrol (WSP) released details this morning regarding Sunday morning’s car versus pole crash on W Axton Road that left many without power for hours.

According to WSP, the 2005 Mazda 3 was heading eastbound on W Axton Road toward Northwest Drive when it left the roadway to the right, striking the power pole and a utility box. The driver and his 20-year old female passenger were evaluated at the scene and neither were reported to have suffered injuries.

WSP identified the driver as Brandon L Johnson-Martin, age 19, of Bellingham. Johnson-Martin, according to Whatcom County Jail records, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), minor in possession/consumption, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of the controlled substance act (VUCSA).

Whatcom County Fire District 7 Assistant Fire Chief Larry Hoffman said they responded to a related outside fire started by fallen power wires on W Axton Road by Old Settler Drive. Hoffman confirmed this fire was related to the accident nearly a mile away.
