Custer man arrested and charged with murder following shooting in residence

CUSTER, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 10:20pm on Saturday, January 11, 2025, to a residence on the 8300 block of Valley View Road due to reports of persons fighting.

While law enforcement personnel were enroute, additional reports were received that shots had been fired and there was an unconscious person in the residence.

Law enforcement arrived to find 3 other injured persons in addition to the unconscious person. North Whatcom Fire and Rescue personnel staged nearby while law enforcement brought the persons out of the unsecured residence to be transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center.

Whatcom County Jail records show Valentin Rivera, age 43, was arrested and booked into the jail about 1am by Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with suspicion of 2 counts of domestic violence assault and 2nd-degree murder.

As of January 12, 2025, Rivera was being held without the possibility of bond pending bail being set during a preliminary hearing in Whatcom County Superior Court.
