Shorty’s Coffee Shop was a daily stable for many as they drove past on Barrett Road and Main Street. But since closing in April of 2014, the building has sat empty.

Now, after becoming disgruntled with industrial shift work last year, Thommy John Jeffery decided it would make a great location to create a base of operations for his many creative endeavors. People driving past are noticing a soft brown glow from the building as Jeffery works on a tattoo, fabricates a new piece of metalwork art or sings along while strumming his guitar.

His creative talents come through in the redecorated décor of the building which is adorned with many pieces of Jeffrey’s metalwork art creating a busy steampunk look.

The sign outside 5719 Barrett Road says, Made 2 Create Inkworks, and tattoos are Jeffery’s mainstay. Having been a tattoo artist in Washington for nearly ten years, Jeffery already has a following.

Originally from Oregon, Jeffery moved to Washington to be closer to his then girlfriend and now wife. They are raising their son from their home here in Ferndale.

Jeffery told Discover Ferndale it was always his dream to open a one-of-a-kind tattoo shop with “a relaxing, artistic and family-friendly atmosphere.”

Jeffery says he learned his tattoo craft from other artists such as Dax McClellan and Csaba Müllner. His shop is equipped with new rotary tattoo machines which are less painful, quiet and enable smoother tattoos. He describes the ink he uses as sterile, non-toxic and vegan-friendly.
