UPDATED: Crashes muck up southbound and northbound traffic on I-5

FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 8:40am on Monday, December 8, 2025, due to reports of a semi-truck versus passenger car crash in the southbound lanes north of the Slater Road interchange.

Initial radio reports from the scene were that the semi-truck and trailer were on the right shoulder and a passenger van was in the median.

The right southbound lane was closed and the left northbound lane was closed to tow the van from the median.

A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper reported by radio there were no injuries.

About 9:15am, about 10 minutes after the southbound lanes were reportedly reopened, first responders were dispatched again. This time to the northbound lanes under the Slater Road overpass due to a crash involving 2 semi-truck trailer rigs. Both lanes were reported blocked.

WSP reported from the scene by radio that, in addition to the 2 jackknifed semi-truck trailers, there was a third crash in the area involving 2 passenger vehicles.

As of 10:10am, traffic continued to use the northbound Slater Road off- and on-ramps to get around the crash scene. There was a 2-mile traffic backup in the northbound lanes.

WSP Trooper Kelsey Harding told Whatcom News the 3 crashes were deemed non injury. The 2 semi-truck trailers crash resulted in 1 of the trucks leaking fuel. Both northbound lanes were closed while the fuel was being contained after which the trucks will require towing from the scene before the lanes could be reopened.

As of 12:15pm, there was no estimate for when the lanes would be reopened.

About 2pm, a WSP trooper at the scene radioed that 1 northbound lane had been reopened.

As of 2:30pm, the trooper radioed that all northbound lanes were reopened.
