UPDATED: Multiple crashes snarl northbound and southbound I-5 lanes through Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A multi-vehicle crash or crashes snarled traffic in the northbound lanes of I-5 south of the Ohio/Iowa Streets interchanges today, May 5th, about 3pm.

Aid crews were dispatched to the scene due to 1 person complaining of pains according to radio transmissions from the scene. No one was transported from the scene.

A commercial vehicle ended up in the median against the cable barrier while other passenger vehicles could be seen further north stopped along the side of the road on the bridge over Whatcom Creek.

Traffic was able to continue to get past the scene in a single open lane. By 3:15pm, a 2-mile backup in the northbound lanes stretched past the Samish Way interchange.

About 3:45pm, first responders were dispatched to the southbound lanes of I-5 near the Sunset Drive interchange due to a report of another blocking crash. As with the earlier incidents, traffic appeared by be able to get past in an open lane. No injuries were reported in this incident.
