UPDATED: Multiple crashes impact evening commute in the northbound lanes of I-5 in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 5pm due to a report of a crash blocking all the northbound lanes of I-5 south of the Iowa/Ohio Street interchange in Bellingham.

As of 5:30pm, at least 1 lane had been reopened through the area.

Subsequent information indicated multiple crashes in the area with at least 1 patient being transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center by ambulance.

About 5:55pm, law enforcement were advised of a crash in the northbound lanes north of the Old Fairhaven Parkway interchange.

WSP Trooper Jacob Kennett told Whatcom News the next day that there was 4 collisions total. The first was a single-vehicle crash where a vehicle had spun out into a jersey barrier. Within 20 minutes, 3 other collisions occurred in the northbound lanes behind it. There were only minor injuries resulting from all the crashes. Kennett noted these were the only collisions reported to the WSP that day.

I-5 through Bellingham is extremely dangerous because some people drive too fast and some people drive while texting.

The only solution is to be sure there are severe financial consequences for dangerous driving. Nothing else will work.
