It wasn’t until after their plane touched down Friday evening at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after a several hour cross-country flight, the recently crowned World Series champions discovered there would be a community event in their honor the next afternoon.
At Saturday’s afternoon ceremony, local dignitaries spoke to the crowd of nearly 100 friends, family and neighbors gathered on 2nd Avenue between Main Street and Vista Drive.
Former Mayor of Ferndale Gary Jensen pointed out that while many in the crowd had likely played a lot of baseball only the honorees could include winning a world series.
Team Manager Bill Hatchett thanked the community for their support during their tournaments and during the world series competition. Hatchett then introduced each player and explained their contributions to the team.
Ferndale Mayor Jon Mutchler then wrapped things up with an official proclamation declaring August 12th to be “Ferndale 12u Cal Ripken Championship Day.”
