Some Ferndale area businesses found themselves without the ability to make or receive phone calls via their landline service since early this morning. It turned out Comcast Business Voice customers nationwide were suffering the same plight.
While details are few, Comcast has acknowledged the situation as seen in the twitter post below.
We are aware that there is an issue with our Comcast Business Voice service and we apologize for the inconvenience. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

No estimate for restoring service has been given.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management (DEM) Deputy Director John Gargett said anyone impacted by the outage that needs to contact 911 should do so using a cell phone.

Comcast is saying service has been restored for most of its customers. No reason was provided for what caused the outage.
