Main Street’s parallel parking does not lend itself well to implementing handicap spaces but after receiving citizen requests, the City will be asking City Councilmembers to approve converting 4 parking spaces.
According to City Council documents for this Tuesday’s meeting, City of Ferndale Public Works Director Kevin Renz will present a recommendation to convert 4 spaces in the downtown core along Main Street to reserved for handicapped use.
There are a total of 17 parking spaces in the downtown core within the City’s right of way and 31 others on private property according to the City’s recommendation.
Modifications required for the change are cosmetic according to the City Council documents. “Spaces will be modified to include color coded curb, ADA pavement markings, and sidewalk mounted signage. Work will be performed by the Public Works Crew with a non-labor inclusive cost of approximately $350 per space.”
Proposed locations on Main Street are the southwest and northeast corners at 3rd Avenue, the northeast corner at 2nd Avenue and the southwest corner at 1st Avenue. Locations are shown on the picture below.

The Ferndale City Council will be asked to approve the recommendations at Tuesday night’s City Council Meeting. The public is invited to attend.
