City Council votes in library air-conditioning and new planning commissioner

At last night’s regular meeting of the Ferndale City Council, the City’s 2018 budget was approved, but not before making one last change.

Councilmember Keith Olson made the motion, with Councilmember Cathy Watson seconding, to include an additional $100,000 in the budget for the installation of air-conditioning equipment at the Ferndale Public Library. It had been argued many would come to the library to seek refuge from hot weather over the past years but found little relief. Opening windows was the only option library officials said while petitioning City Council members during past Council Committee meetings.

Also during last night’s meeting, Mayor Jon Mutchler’s appointee, Greg Crim, was approved by unanimous vote to replace Victor Boulos on the City Planning Commission. Boulos recently announced he would be stepping down at the end of the year.

At this time last year, Mutchler proposed replacing sitting Planning Commissioner Yvonne Goldsmith with Crim who, according to his application for the position at the time, was senior associate pastor of Cornwall Church in Bellingham from 2005 to February 2016 and a real estate broker at Bellwether Real Estate in Bellingham since August 2015. Mutchler’s choice not to reappoint Goldsmith was met with widespread City Council disapproval and hindered his ability to get an appointee approved for two months. It was not until February when the council ultimately approved Mutchler appointee, Connie Faria. Faria later announced her candidacy for City Council but lost in the General Election to Kate Hansen.

And also at last night’s meeting, Councilmember Carol Bersch was recognized for her service on the City Council since last night’s meeting was her last since she chose not to seek reelection after serving 4 years. Newly elected councilmembers Kate Hansen and Fred Kennedy and reelected councilmember Cathy Watson will be sworn in at the next City Council meeting in January.
