BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officials report that a child died in the water in Whatcom Falls Park today, Friday, July 29th.
BPD Deputy Chief Don Almer told Whatcom News that a 911 call was received about 2:35pm reporting a missing child in the park.

The child was reported to have been playing in a pond with a 4-foot waterfall about 200 feet down the trail from the parking lot before being reported missing. Almer emphasized it was believed the child had not been jumping off anything into the water. The family was in the park for a gathering.
Bellingham Fire Department (BFD) crews joined police and others in searching for the child.
About 3pm, personnel from BFD located and extricated the child from the water. The child was then transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center where they were declared dead.
Almer said the age of the child was being withheld but did say they were younger than 16-years-old.
Almer said BPD extended their condolences to the family.
I’m so sorry for the family’s loss, my prayers are with them!
I am so sorry for the family’s tragic loss. I pray for God’s strength, comfort and peace to fill them and surround them with empathetic comforters.🙏✝️
