Charges dismissed in fatal I-5 car vs pedestrian incident in October 2022

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A vehicular homicide charge against Lowell Foster Mase, age 68 and of Bellingham, was dismissed without prejudice in Whatcom County Superior Court on April 17th. According to court records, the dismissal was due to new information provided by defense’s expert witness.

Mase was arrested following a car versus pedestrian fatality incident on October 7, 2022, in the southbound lanes of I-5 between the Slater Road and W Bakerview Road interchanges. A press memo from Washington State Patrol (WSP) at the time said a 1998 Ford Ranger driven by Mase was southbound on I-5 when it began driving on the right shoulder and struck a pedestrian.

Mase was arrested that same day and charged with suspicion of vehicular homicide while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or any drug. He remained in custody until being released upon dismissal of the charges.
