Updated: Car vs motorcycle fatality crash closes Chuckanut Drive

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to Chuckanut Drive (SR11), south of Soundview Road, due to an injury car versus motorcycle crash about 4:15pm today, July 24th.

Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Rocky Oliphant said a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup collided with a 2016 Harley-Davidson FLSTC motorcycle.

The motorcycle was traveling southbound and crossed over the centerline, colliding head on with northbound pickup according to Oliphant.

2 persons were transported from the scene via ambulance, Oliphant told Whatcom News.

The passenger on the motorcycle passed away and the driver is in serious condition according to Oliphant. The driver of the pickup was uninjured.

A WSP press memo said the 2 people on the motorcycle were from Granite Falls and both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Drugs or alcohol were not considered to have been factors in the crash. Both vehicles were considered total losses and towed from the scene.

As of 5:45pm, WSP investigators were surveying the scene and Oliphant said drivers should expect both lanes of travel to be closed for an extended period, possibly 2 or more hours.

The road was reopened about 7pm.

WSP reported on July 25th that the driver of the motorcycle had also died.

Oliphant said troopers were out with an earlier blocking incident 2 miles to the south earlier today. That was a non-injury vehicle versus tree crash that required blocking all lanes to retrieve the vehicle.

This story was updated at 9:30pm with information provided by the WSP press memo and again at 7:15pm on July 25th to reflect the second fatality.
