A student event was cut short tonight when power to the building was cut off about 8:45pm after a car crashed into a building on the Windward High School campus tonight (more pictures below).
According to law enforcement radio transmissions shortly after the crash, witnesses first said the driver got into an SUV and was driven away from the scene. Later they were told the driver may have left on foot.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around the area and brought in a scent tracking K-9 unit as they searched for the driver of the car. As of 10:30pm, no suspect had been located.
The burgundy 4-door passenger car came to rest between a hedge and the building on the east side of the building parallel to Northwest Drive. The student event was in another building according to some who were there. According to those students, the building struck by the car is not currently being used.
Puget Sound Energy reported no other customers in the area were without power. But, in addition to the on campus outage, at least one street light and a flashing red light were out at the nearby intersection of Northwest Drive and W Smith Road.
Witnesses reported seeing the car drive southbound through the intersection of Northwest Drive and W Smith Road without stopping and at a high rate of speed. Marks on the southwest sidewalk from the intersection provide a trail leading to where the car came to rest after crashing through thick bushes alongside the building. An electric meter box set atop an inground vault could be seen crumpled up in front of the car several yards from where it had originally been.
