Calm and cold weather bring Air Stagnation Advisory

While clear skies and calm breezes are a nice change from the recent rain and wind, these are also prime stagnate air conditions. Stagnate air is unable to clear away smoke from wood stoves, vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions.

And with the expected accompanying nightly lows in the twenties, many neighbors will be relying on their wood stoves.

The National Weather Service today, December 29th, issued a Stagnate Air Advisory across several days from 10pm Wednesday to 10am Monday. According to the advisory,

Poor air quality may develop as a strong temperature inversion is expected … which will trap pollution near the surface.

Wood smoke…vehicle…or industrial emissions may degrade air quality through the late week and weekend into early next week.

The WAQA air quality measure at the NW Clean Air Agency’s Loomis Road air monitoring station at 12pm today was 16. Below 50 is considered “Good.”

Discover Ferndale will continue monitoring and reporting on this situation.
