The three girls had sat down to quickly get their homework done. Little did they know they would have a lot more time than needed to work on it.
Yesterday, at the Ferndale clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club, three middle school girls found themselves stuck in the “Be Great Room” where they had met up to do their homework. At some point, they realized they were stuck in the room due to a door latch that would not let them open the door.
Others outside the room became aware of their plight and discovered they too were unable to convince the latch to open. Branch administrators showed up with the key but discovered it too was useless.
After exhausting all available means of unlatching the door, the fire department was called in. Lock outs are not something Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews are called out to deal with often but they arrived well-equipped.
According to Boys & Girls Club Ferndale Branch Manager Anya Milton,
Many of our kiddos were interested in watching the process and we were so impressed with all the tools they used to remove the industrial strength door handle.
Milton also credited the girls stuck in the room.
These girls did such a great job at keeping calm, staying patient and playing hangman on the white board while Lt. Iverson and Firefighter Engles worked to remove the door handle.
Once the handle fell to the ground, we all cheered and clapped for they were FINALLY free.

Afterwards the girls got to pose for a picture with their rescuers.
