FERNDALE, Wash. — Traffic was snarled in the downtown Ferndale area after a Burlington Northern Railway-Santa Fe (BNSF) train stopped while blocking traffic at the Washington Street and at Hovander Road crossing about 3:30pm today, Friday, September 8th.

No information was immediately available from BNSF but a reader told Whatcom News they were near the railroad bridge over the Nooksack River near Main Street when a snap followed by hissing was heard and then the train came to a stop. Separated railroad cars could be seen on the bridge.

As of 4:15pm, the roads reportedly remained blocked.
