Blaine man charged with homicide in 2021 fentanyl death of 30-year-old woman

BLAINE, Wash. — Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) released information in a press release today detailing the arrest of Tanner Larson, age 31 and of Blaine, on August 3rd and a charge of controlled substances homicide and several other drug-related charges.

According to the press release, Blaine Police responded on May 7, 2021, about 8:30am to the 700 block of E Street in Blaine where a 30-year-old woman had been found dead. An investigation into a possible controlled substance homicide was begun and included assistance from WCSO and the Whatcom County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A toxicology report from the Medical Examiner’s Officer showed fentanyl in the victim’s system.

The investigation found the victim had been in contact with Larson about obtaining pain killer medication. Messages between the victim and Larson showed Larson had sold the victim pills on multiple occasions between April 28th and May 6th.

On August 3, 2022, WCSO Criminal Interdiction deputies with the assistance of the Whatcom County Gang and Drug Task Force located Larson in the 4300 block of Meridian Street in Bellingham and he was placed under arrest.

A search of a backpack Larson was carrying at the time of his arrest revealed the following.

  • cash
  • a Ziplock bag with an unidentified powder
  • 4 empty Ziplock bags
  • burnt foil with narcotic residue
  • a bag containing about 100 blue M-30 pills (fentanyl) weighing about 12.9 grams

Larson was booked into Whatcom County Jail and charged with suspicion of the following crimes.

  • 3 counts of possession of a controlled substance
  • 3 counts of counterfeit controlled substance violation
  • 6 counts of delivery of a controlled substance
  • controlled substance homicide

Larson was scheduled to make a preliminary appearance on these charges in Whatcom County Superior Court today, August 4th. As of 4:30pm, jail recorded indicated he remained in custody without the option to post bail.
