Just a month short of a year after it was damaged, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has completed repairs of the Birch Bay-Lynden Road overpass at I-5. The single lane restriction on the overpass and periodic closures of lanes of I-5 are now a thing of the past.

WSDOT Project Engineer Jason Koreski confirmed today the repair work has been completed. Both lanes on the overpass are now operating without restrictions.

The overpass was damaged May 21st, 2015, when it was struck by an excavator being carried on a flatbed truck traveling southbound on I-5.

Two girders were struck by the excavator. One girder was seriously damaged and needed to be replaced. The other girder incurred minor damage and was repaired. Replacing the girder required removing part of the bridge deck over southbound I-5. Project costs were shown as $823,000 on the WSDOT project page.
