BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham man, Sando I Cosovic, 25, was sentenced February 9, 2026, in Whatcom County Superior Court to 3 months of total confinement. The sentence follows a plea of guilty for attempting to elude a police vehicle. Related gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges were dropped.
The conviction and sentence stems from an incident on January 25, 2025. At about 2am, Bellingham Police Department officers in downtown Bellingham heard a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Officers observed a 4-door Mercury Grand Marquis driving on Railroad Avenue from E Holly Street.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, the vehicle swerved past a patrol vehicle and fled in reverse down E Chestnut Street. During the pursuit, both front tires came off the vehicle before it crashed into railroad tracks at the intersection of Roeder Avenue and Coho Way.
The court set bail at $25,000 bond during a preliminary hearing on January 27, 2025. A bond was posted that same day and Cosovic was released from custody.
The court found Cosovic indigent and ordered him to pay $700 in legal financial obligations. The total includes a $500 victim assessment and $200 in court costs. Cosovic will receive credit for time served prior to sentencing. If eligible and approved, he may serve partial confinement including work crew, work release and home detention
Cosovic’s has prior felony convictions for 2 counts of reckless driving, attempted 1st-degree robbery, and 2nd-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission.
