Bellingham man charged with burglary and assault following domestic violence incident

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officers arrested 36-year-old Angel Rey Gonzales on January 16, 2026. Officers responded to a report of a physical domestic incident in the 1400 block of Birchwood Avenue at about 2:45am.

Upon arrival, officers heard a female screaming from an apartment and kicked in a locked door to gain entry. A victim was located inside with children. The victim stated Gonzales restricted her breathing for about 10 seconds and used a knife to cut a suitcase. Officers observed a cut on the suitcase and located a filet knife on a stovetop.

Gonzales fled the apartment by jumping from a balcony. Officers later located Gonzales hiding in a trash can at the apartment complex wearing only underwear. According to court documents, Gonzales was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the arrest.

During a hearing on January 20, 2026, the court set bail at $150,000 bond or $15,000 cash. Gonzales currently is facing charges in Whatcom County Superior Court.

  • 1st-degree burglary
  • 2nd-degree assault (strangulation)
  • Unlawful imprisonment
  • Felony violation of a domestic violence order

A domestic violence no-contact order was filed on January 20, 2026, protecting the victim.
