Ferndale Police Car emergencyThe Ferndale Police Department wants to write fewer tickets for failure to wear a seat belt and they want your help.

Expect to see more than one seat belt emphasis patrol in the next week or two within the Ferndale city limits. The Ferndale PD hopes this forewarning will encourage everyone to “buckle-up” if not to be safer then at least to avoid the $124 ticket.

Every occupant in a passenger vehicle must be using their seat belt to be in compliance with Washington State law.

  • Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half.
  • Of the teens (aged 13-20 years) that died in crashes in 2012, approximately 55% of them were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
  • Adults age 18-34 are less likely to wear seat belts than adults age 35 or older.

Ferndale PD’s seat belt emphasis patrols are funded by grants from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission’s “Target Zero” program.
