Air quality alert in Whatcom County effective beginning Saturday

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — An air quality alert for smoke has been issued by the Northwest Clean Air Agency and other Puget Sound area clean air agencies along with the Washington State Department of Ecology across much of northwestern Washington, including Whatcom County. It is scheduled to begin at 9am on Saturday, August 19th, to noon on Monday.

A change to easterly winds is expected to push smoke from wildfires in the Cascades and southern British Columbia into the Puget Sound region.

The alert is due to the possibility air quality may reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups air quality index (AQI) range or worse on Saturday and the Unhealthy AQI range or worse on Sunday.
