Discover Ferndale will begin issuing daily reminders at 9pm via social media encouraging neighbors to make sure their vehicle, home and garage doors are closed and locked before they go to bed. The hope is this will, over time, become a routine for everyone.
The goal of the growing nationwide #9pmRoutine campaign is to reduce the number of vehicle and residential burglaries that are often the result of valuables having been left in open view inside unlocked vehicles, garages and homes.
According to Ferndale Police, over half of the 31 vehicle prowls they have investigated so far this year occurred after the vehicles had been left unlocked.
The #9pmRoutine campaign recently began in Florida and it is very similar to a series of televised evening public service announcements that aired in the 1970s and 80s that asked parents “Do you know where your children are?”
