3-car crash on Portal Way in Custer sends 1 to the hospital

CUSTER, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 7100 block of Portal Way about 1:30pm yesterday, November 11th, due to a report of a multi-vehicle crash.

Approximate location of the crash

According to photos shared by Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) to their social media accounts, 1 of the vehicles ended up near a culvert in a deep ditch that runs under Portal Way and adjacent railroad tracks.

According to WCFD7, they removed the driver from the vehicle in the ditch which required placing them in a rescue basket and then lifting them out via ropes attached to a ladder truck.

WCFD7 Lieutenant Michael Gustafson told Whatcom News they transported 1 patient from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Portal Way was closed in both directions for an extended time following the crash.

No information was immediately available about what caused the crash or if any citations or charges resulted.
