2 reported shooting incidents in Bellingham, 1 arrested

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police were dispatched to 2 separate shooting incidents about 2 hours apart during the evening of Sunday, November 26th.

Officers were initially dispatched about 6:20pm to the 2400 block of McKenzie Avenue in the Happy Valley neighborhood about due to unconfirmed reports of gun shots and followed by what sounded like a vehicle crash.

According to the Bellingham Police Department (BPD) press log, the incident was recorded as a drive-by shooting incident.

According to unconfirmed law enforcement radio transmissions at the time, officers were able to confirm at least 1 shot had been fired and detailed descriptions of 2 vehicles leaving the scene at a high rate of speed were broadcast. No injuries were reported.

Western Washington University issued an alert about 7:10pm regarding the incident that also described it as a drive-by shooting incident.

About 8:30pm, BPD officers responded to another shots fired report in the 3700 block of Meridian Street.

Unconfirmed reports were that shots were heard in the area of a parking lot where 2 males had been heard arguing. While some damage was reported, no injuries were reported.

A suspect was arrested at the scene of the Meridian Street incident and booked into the Whatcom County Jail. Jail records and the BPD press log identify the suspect as 29-year-old Roberto Briones.

Jail records indicate that he was charged with driving under the influence, unlawful possession of a firearm, drive-by shooting and 3rd-degree malicious mischief (domestic violence).

As of November 27th, Briones remained in custody at the jail pending a preliminary hearing where bail could be set.

There were no reports that the 2 incidents were related.
