BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A 19- and a 20-year-old were arrested following an investigation into reports of 2 drive-by shooting incidents that occurred within minutes of each other about 1:15am on Sunday morning in downtown Bellingham.
Bellingham Police released a statement detailing finding from their initial investigation.
According to the statement, What-Comm 911 received multiple calls reporting shots fired in the area of the Cornwall Avenue and E Magnolia Street intersection.
A group of five people were reportedly walking near the intersection when shots were fired at them from inside a car driving by. A shot struck 1 of the people in the foot, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury. The unknown car sped off without being contacted.
The group ran to their parked Honda sedan on Railroad Avenue. Enroute, they thought they saw the car which had just shot at them. 1 of the 5 pulled own gun and fired multiple rounds at the car and then fled with the rest of the group.
It was determined by investigators that the car shot at had nothing at all to do with this incident. The uninvolved rideshare driver was not injured but his car sustained damage after being struck by multiple rounds.
The group fled north on Railroad Avenue in their Honda. A responding Bellingham Police patrol unit attempted to pull them over.
Rather than stopping, the driver fled for a few blocks and stopped on N. State St. All occupants were called out of the Honda one by one on a high-risk stop, and that is when officers found an injured 37-year-old male. They applied first aid to his injury before he was transported to the emergency room. As the traffic stop was happening, a handgun was found in the roadway along the path the driver of the Honda took. One of the occupants threw it out as they were fleeing.
The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old male was arrested for rendering criminal assistance 1st degree, for assisting the suspect escape the scene of the shooting.
