BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the left southbound lane of I-5 about 9:30pm, Sunday, August 7th, due to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a deer. When they arrived, they found another vehicle had subsequently struck the first.

According to a press memo from Washington State Patrol, occupants of the first car, a white 2017 Volkswagen Jetta, were out of the vehicle at the time of the second collision.
WSP said a white 2010 Toyota Corolla was southbound on I-5 when it crashed into the Volkswagen. As a result of the impact, the Volkswagen ended up on the right shoulder and the Toyota rolled, ending up on its top in the median.
A 19-year-old passenger in the Toyota was transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center. Both the driver and passenger were determined to have been wearing their seatbelts. Drugs or alcohol were determined to have been involved.
The driver of the Toyota, identified as Dylan Matthew Ferry, age 20 of Blaine, was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail by WSP. He is charged with suspicion of vehicular assault and 3rd degree driving while his license was suspended.
As of the morning of Monday, August 8th, Ferry remained in custody pending a preliminary appearance in Whatcom County Superior Court.
Both vehicles were considered total losses.
