Car fire slows I-5 traffic in Ferndale

FERNDALE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a car fire in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the Slater Road Friday, August 19th, about 11:30am.

Firefighters with Whatcom County Fire District 7 (WCFD7) arrived and found the vehicle fully involved at the entrance to the off-ramp to Slater Road.

WCFD7 Assistant Fire Chief Ben Boyko told Whatcom News they did not find anyone around or inside the vehicle while firefighters put it out. Firefighters stuck around while the burned-out car cooled off.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Jacob Kennett said a trooper came upon the abandoned burning vehicle while on another call. The owner was not able to be immediately determined and the vehicle was towed to an impound lot.

Traffic was backed up in the southbound lanes about 2 miles while first responders had the right lane blocked and the off-ramp to Slater Road was closed.
